The current codes indicate cylinders 2 and 6. I have been struggling with this issue for months. The heads were treated to surfacing and a fresh valve job using the factory 1.78/1.45-inch valve sizes. 1997 - 2003 F150 - 97 4.6L codes 302 and 306 intermittent problem - Its been quite a while since Ive posted to these forums. Since all 289 heads flow the same and given the expense of original Hi-Po heads, we chose to build a replica set using '66 C60Z castings that already featured the slotted pushrod holes. Also, you can tell if the fan blades or shroud on the radiator are damaged just by looking at them.
Check the bolts and clips to see if they are loose. A visual inspection is enough to find out the problem. These features make the Hi-Po heads both desirable and expensive, but any of the more common pre-'66 heads can be converted to Hi-Po use by drilling and tapping for screw-in studs and upgrading the valvespring package (there is no need to cut spring cups). A loose or damaged engine fan can also be the reason for engine ticking or tapping noise.

If check engine light code P0174 persists after you have reconnected and replaced all damaged vacuum lines and cleaned the mass airflow sensor, perform a fuel pressure test. If the check engine light comes back on with code P0174 continue the diagnostic process. some vehicles may exhibit an engine overheating condition and / or the malfunction indicator lamp (mil) may also be illuminated with codes p1285 and p1299 stored in memory. The Hi-Po 289 heads offered a few desirable features, including screw-in rocker studs (no guide plates), cast-in valvespring bosses, and slotted pushrod guide holes (something shared with nearly all pre-'66 heads) that eliminated the need for either guide plates or rail rockers. Reinstall the mass airflow sensor and clear the check engine light using FIXD. The original Hi-Po did receive a special set of cylinder heads, but not one that necessarily provided a power advantage.
